This August we have teamed up with Moreno Cafe & Bakery to make a gelato sandwich, unlike you have tasted before. If you’re looking for dessert in Auckland, this is certainly one to try!
The lowdown on the sandwich:
It all starts with their Señorita bread - a soft, fluffy Filipino sweet roll filled with burnt butter & brown sugar and coated in toasted breadcrumbs. This is lightly toasted and filled with three scoops of gelato.
We recommend the Coconut Ube, Chocolate Sorbet & Mango Lassi – but the choice is all yours.
The story behind the sandwich:
Our gelato kitchen sits right next door to Moreno in Northcote, so this collab feels extra special.
We sat down with Demi and Chino from Moreno to chat all things Señorita, and to hear the inspiration behind the dessert:
What is Señorita bread?
Señorita is a staple back home in the Philippines. It’s a soft, fluffy Filipino sweet roll filled with burnt butter & brown sugar and coated in toasted breadcrumbs. It always sells out, so it’s typically eaten fresh and hot out of the oven.
What are your best memories of having Señorita?
All the bakeries back home in the Philippines have Senoritas, and I would often buy one after school as a treat, eaten by itself hot. If we went to my Grandparents house they would often have them in the middle of the table and we would have them soaked in hot coffee. In summer, we would have them stuffed with ice cream.
What was the inspiration behind this collab?
We want to give customers a chance to experience Señorita bread and how we enjoy these back home! The Señorita taste even better here in NZ because they are made with real butter, whereas back home margarine is used instead. Bread stuffed with ice cream is kind of like street food in the Philippines, so we are bringing a little taste of the Philippines here to NZ.
How popular are Señorita at Moreno?
Very popular! We make hundreds each week and have many locals coming and getting them regularly.
What flavours of gelato do you recommend stuffing it with?
Ooh that’s a tricky decision…
Chocolate Sorbet, Cookies & Cream, Coconut Ube, Mango Lassi… how many can I choose (haha)?
Traditionally it would be eaten with coconut, ube or mango flavours so we would have to start there.
