Olive Oil Gelato in Auckland — yes, you heard right!
We've teamed up with Fat God Olive Oil — the cold-pressed, single-origin Cretan finishing oil — to create an olive oil gelato you won't find anywhere else in New Zealand, made in small batches at Little 'Lato and scooping now in our Auckland and Hamilton gelato shops, in Ponsonby and Grey Street.
Introducing the olive oil gelato
Fat God & Little 'Lato are two brands that exist because we wholeheartedly believe that some of the best things in life — olive oil and gelato — shouldn't stay hidden on the other side of the world.
Fat God's oil comes from Koroneiki olives grown in the hills of Sitia, Crete. Bold, peppery, single origin, cold pressed.
We took that oil and made gelato the way we learnt it in Italy — combining olive oil, vanilla bean, a touch of lemon zest, a hint of sea salt. Sounds strange, tastes incredible!
Meet Cam from Fat God Olive Oil
What was the moment that made you think "New Zealand needs this oil"?
We have been watching the world explode with Olive Oil over the last two years, and it wasn't until one of our founders, Cherie, popped over to Greece for a holiday and came back screaming that Greek olive oil is the thing that's missing in NZ.
Where did the name Fat God come from?
So the name Fat God comes from Greek mythology. We wanted to portray how divine our oil was by associating it with the Greek gods. There's one called Dionysus, who was known for food, wine and celebrations. We knew this was our god. But the name Dionysus is kinda weird and hard to spell, so we chose Fat God, because he looked a little more round than the chiselled gods around him.
What's the biggest misconception Kiwis have about olive oil?
That not all olive oil is created equal. It's like wine; there are so many levels to olive oil and the flavour scales across the board. What we see mostly in this country is olive oil that's been mixed and probably stripped out of the olives using heat and chemicals. Single-origin cold-press oil is produced with strict measures & standards to not only lock in flavour but retain as much of the good stuff as possible!
Why Koroneiki? What makes this region unique? Why this olive oil in particular?
The Koroneiki olive is legendary for its flavour, and ours is grown by a family producer in Crete, with generations of experience in olive oil. That heritage really comes through in the bold, peppery flavour. We just fell in love with its unique flavour and knew this was what NZ was missing.
Most of us grab whatever bottle is on special. What are we missing? How is this different?
There's a difference between oils! Finishing oil (which is what ours is) has loads more flavour and is made to finish food. It's the type of oil you would drink out of a bottle. You don't cook with it. Cooking will burn away the flavour that you're really paying for.
What's something you wish everyone knew about olive oil?
How incredible the flavour is compared to the classic big old 1L bottle you grew up with. There's a reason there are years of heritage across the world worshipping olive oil regions.
How would you describe the flavour of Fat God olive oil?
Addictive! Like a warming peppery hit that touches your taste buds. It's divine on all things and adds a new layer of taste that's hard to match. I drink it straight.
It's a finishing oil — what are the three things you'd pour it on first?
I'm a pizza fiend, so pizza always needs a good drizzle over the top! Any bread is a match made in heaven. It works with any kind of salad too, and of course, gelato! (Plain gelato with salt and our olive oil is addictive.)
What's the strangest thing you've poured it on?
Haha, right, picture this: sourdough (2cm thick), butter, peanut butter, then our oil & some rock salt. Don't knock it till you try it.
What was your first reaction when Little 'Lato said "olive oil gelato"?
Like a kid on Christmas. Instantly thought this was a great idea! So excited for everyone to get to try this epic combo.
Is olive oil gelato like ice cream?
While most New Zealander’s generally think gelato is just ‘fancy ice cream’ there are actually some technical differences. We explain it all at the video below!
